Superrb: The Team behind our Exciting New website

Superrb are the team behind our exciting new website. They are based on Hayling Island, a couple of miles away from Anglepoise HQ. We hope that that the following Q&A gives an interesting insight into them individually and also shows why they are such a great bunch of guys to work with. A special note of thanks to Rufus, Matt's dog, who always keeps our feet warm when we visit by lying on them.

Name: Giles Smith

Company/professional role: Technical Director

Can you summarize what you do in sentence or two?
I’m responsible for any technical decisions and lead the back end development for projects. I also help Matt with writing specs, doing feasibility studies  and proposals.

How did you first break into the industry you’re in?
It started when I was working as a software developer for a hosting company in Manchester. I started getting more involved in the web community there and then was head hunted by a digital agency as their lead dev.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?
The nature of agency work is that everyday is different, and each brings a new challenge or problem to be solved. It’s not always easy, but I love it.

How do you wind down at the end of the day?
I enjoy reading science fiction novels. It allows me to switch off and imagine myself in a completely different world which can be very liberating after a challenging day being [eye] balls deep in code. I am currently reading the Ender series by Orson Scott Card.

What advice would you give someone starting out in your field?
Don't be afraid to start small. I see developers over and over go off hunting for the next big thing they can invent. In truth a very lucky few ever succeed this way. Start by learning the industry and always be looking to improve your skills. Once you have built a reputation as an individual look for like minded individuals you can team up with who have skills that compliment your own. You shouldn't expect to be able to do everything yourself, pick a field and master it. Always welcome constructive criticism and take the time to understand why something didn't work as expected or failed.

If you weren’t doing this, what might you be doing?
I studied physics at university and specialised in lasers and their applications. So if I weren't in the web business then I would probably be out trying to lash one to a shark for Dr Evil. Well, that or where a lot physicists end up; finance and banking.

Work aside, what’s your proudest achievement?
Representing my country, Great Britain, as a fencer.

And your wildest dream?
To get the opportunity to go into space and do a space walk.

Listening to Owl City before dropping into the black run at Innerleithen.

How do you wind down at the end of the day?
A push on my wheelyboard or going for a surf.

What advice would you give someone starting out in your field?
Play to your strengths and don’t follow the crowd. Don’t be afraid to approach people you want to work with and if you’re excited about your work, it’s easier for other to get amped too.

Probably doing what I’m doing now but for someone else and not enjoying it as much.

First would be becoming a dad. Second would be surviving the olympic downhill mountain bike run in Innerleithen, closely followed by my least proud moment when I stacked it in the carpark at the bottom in front of all the pros.

And your wildest dream?
Having my own private wavegarden and teaching my dog Rufus to hang 10. That’s not asking for too much is it?

And your guilty pleasure?
I read some pretty trashy adventure novels and enjoy a beer in the shower.

Did you grow up with an Anglepoise®?
Yea I had a red one next to my bed when I was a kid that I used to read by. I’m not sure what model it was but it was red and from the 70s.
