It was a tiny feature in a 1996 edition of the Guardian Weekend Magazine that initiated our longstanding and on-going collaboration with pre-eminent British product designer, Kenneth Grange. Then head of the panel for the 1996 Design Awards, Guardian’s Style Insider recalls that when Grange had been asked to identify his favourite object he came up with a raft of ideas. When pressed to pick just one, Grange eventually narrowed the list down to the Anglepoise® lamp, in his opinion “a minor miracle of balance”.
So when, in 2003 it had become clear that we needed to update and develop the original Anglepoise® design, who better to entrust with the task than Grange himself? As designer of such iconic British designs as the Intercity 125, the Kodak Instamatic and the TX1 London taxi, it was clear he was the man for the job. We were not proved wrong – subsequent designs for the Anglepoise® Type75™, Type1228™ and the TypeC™ LED series have seamlessly integrated form with function and are a perfect fit, both with the original design concept and our modernist design ethos.
Naturally Grange’s influence as foremost British product designer has not gone unnoticed. Appointed CBE in 1984, he is a Master of the Royal Designer for Industry, Gold medallist of the Chartered Society of Designers and twice winner of The Prince Philip Designers Prize, with a string of Design Council Awards to his name. Then, in January of this year came the ultimate accolade when Grange was knighted for his services to design in the 2013 New Years Honours.
At the age 84, with so much achieved, it’s reasonable to assume that most designers would rest on their laurels. Not Kenneth, who shows no signs of slowing down – not least in his association with Anglepoise®. Two new Kenneth Grange lamp designs are soon to be launched and others will follow.
Meanwhile recognition of Kenneth Grange’s massive contribution to industrial product design continues. Just last month Kenneth Grange was awarded the prestigious FX Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Design FX Magazine. Dear Kenneth, in common with the design community at large, we applaud you!
