As if the opening of a spectacular, new and triple size Design Museum in the heart of Kensington isn’t enough, just last week the Design Museum announced the opening of its first High Street shop, conveniently located on Kensington High Street.
Open daily from 10am until 6pm, (7pm on Thursdays) the new shop presents a carefully selected edit of the very best in design books and objects from both established brands (including our own) and emerging designers we should know about even if we don’t.
Designed by renowned British architect John Pawson, who is also responsible for the design of the museum in its new home, the Design Museum shop has just become a must-visit destination for design conscious Londoners and visitors. Its interior, featuring stained oak, glass and terrazzo, provides the perfect backdrop for the Design Museum’s curated edit of covetable design classics and intriguingly offers an insight into the swish aesthetic of the new Design Museum, which opens to the public on 24th November.
In this tempting jewel-box of a shop, Anglepoise® lamps jostle for space with light-as - air paper vessels by Torafu Architects of Japan, ceramics by British industrial design duo, Barber & Osgerby for Royal Doulton, and graphic shaped brass bookmarks by Spanish Mediterranean inspired brand Octaevo. And as well as supporting exhibitions and reflecting exhibitions at the museum, the shop collection will soon include a Design Museum branded range with new designer collaborations and unique products.
Says Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Museum, “The Design Museum shop reflects the values of the museum itself. It’s our ambassador on the high street, always changing, always full of fascinating things, displayed with style, and staffed by people who live and breathe design.”
