Whether you’re working from a tiny desk in your student bedroom, revising at the kitchen table between housemates making dinner, or back home for the holidays trying to get back into a routine, finding a good place to study isn’t always easy. Most students end up working wherever they can, and those spaces aren’t always designed to help you focus.

The good news is that you don’t need a huge desk or lots of expensive accessories to create a productive workspace. A few thoughtful changes can make even the smallest corner feel more comfortable, organised and easier to concentrate in. One of the biggest differences? Good lighting.

When your study space feels comfortable and well set up, it’s easier to settle into your work, stay focused for longer and switch between reading, writing and working on a screen without feeling like you’re constantly battling your surroundings.

Your study set up should work with the space you have

There’s no such thing as the perfect student room. Some have generous desks but most don’t. The reality is that many university students are working with limited space and furniture that has to do more than one job.

Rather than trying to recreate the ideal workspace you’ve seen online, think about making the space you already have work harder. A tidy surface, somewhere comfortable to sit and a dedicated task light will have far more impact on your day than another desk organiser or decorative accessory.

One of the simplest ways to make a temporary workspace feel purposeful is to create a visual boundary. When your lamp switches on, your study session begins. When it switches off, you’re finished for the day. It sounds subtle, but small routines like this help separate work from everything else that’s happening around you.

Why task lighting makes such a difference

After hours spent reading journal articles, annotating textbooks and staring at a laptop screen, tired eyes become part of university life. While no lamp can replace regular breaks, well-positioned task lighting can make studying considerably more comfortable.

The goal isn’t to flood the whole room with light. It’s to direct light exactly where you need it. This reduces the contrast between your work surface and the surrounding space, making it easier to move your eyes between handwritten notes, printed pages and your laptop screen.

Creating a study zone, wherever you are

One of the biggest challenges at university isn’t finding time to study. It’s finding somewhere that feels separate from everything else.

In halls of residence, your bedroom becomes your living room, dining room and workspace all at once. At home, there are family distractions. In a shared house, someone is usually making coffee, cooking dinner or chatting in the next room.

A dedicated study area doesn’t need four walls and a door. Sometimes it’s simply the same corner of the table, the same notebook, the same playlist and the same pool of light. That’s where a thoughtfully designed desk lamp earns its place. Rather than becoming another object on the desk, it becomes the thing that defines the space beneath it.

A compact lamp for compact spaces

If your student desk set up needs to fit into a smaller room, the 90 Mini Mini desk lamp is designed with exactly that in mind.

Its compact footprint leaves valuable desk space free for books, notebooks and a laptop, while its adjustable shade directs light precisely where you need it. An integrated dimmable LED lets you tailor the brightness to suit the task. Powered via USB, it can plug directly into your laptop, making it particularly useful in student accommodation where plug sockets are often in short supply. Because it’s lightweight and easy to carry, it can move with you between your bedroom, the kitchen table or another room without feeling like a permanent fixture. If you’re heading home between terms, it’s just as easy to pack and take with you.

Despite its smaller size, it still delivers the responsive movement Anglepoise is known for, making it simple to reposition the light as you move between reading, writing and screen-based work. Available in a range of colours, it also brings a little personality to a workspace without overwhelming it. For many students, it’s exactly the right balance of practicality, flexibility and thoughtful design.

When your workspace starts to grow with you

Not every university workspace stays temporary. As your course progresses, you might move into a house with a dedicated desk or begin working longer hours on larger projects.

That’s where the Type 75 desk lamp comes into its own. Its wider reach and generous adjustability make it particularly suited to larger desks where you’re often spreading out textbooks, sketchbooks or multiple screens. Whether you’re studying architecture, engineering, design or simply writing your dissertation, it gives you the flexibility to direct light wherever the next task takes you without interrupting your concentration.

For students creating a workspace they’ll continue using after graduation, the Original 1227 desk lamp offers something slightly different. First designed in the 1930s, it remains one of the clearest examples of purposeful British design. Its timeless appearance means it feels just as at home in a first flat or home office as it does in a university bedroom, making it less of a purchase for a course and more of an investment for the years that follow.

""

Buy once. Study for years.

University is full of temporary purchases. Cheap furniture, kitchen essentials and stationery often have a surprisingly short lifespan. A desk lamp doesn’t have to fall into that category.

Every Anglepoise lamp is Guaranteed for Life, reflecting a belief that well-designed products should be repaired, looked after and kept in use rather than replaced. It’s a different way of thinking about buying for university. Instead of choosing something that only needs to last until graduation, you’re choosing something that can move with you into your first job, your next home and every workspace that follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best study set up for a small bedroom?

Focus on the essentials. A clear desk, supportive chair and adjustable task lamp will make a greater difference than filling the space with accessories. Keeping your workspace uncluttered also helps you stay focused during longer study sessions.

What type of desk lamp is best for students?

An adjustable desk lamp allows you to direct light exactly where it’s needed as you switch between reading, writing and working on a laptop. For smaller desks, the 90 Mini Mini is ideal, while the Type 75 and Original 1227 offer greater reach for larger workspaces.

Can good lighting reduce eye strain while studying?

Positioning task lighting correctly can reduce the contrast between your desk, books and surrounding room, making it more comfortable to study for extended periods, particularly when alternating between paper notes and a computer screen.
