Its origins can be traced back to the 1940s, when an adaptation of the Original 1227 was created for navigators’ chart tables, providing a focused, directional pool of light exactly where it was needed.

That history inspired us to look at navigation more broadly. Not simply as the act of finding a route from one place to another, but as a way of looking at the world: observing, collecting, questioning and discovering.

For our latest series of images, we explored that idea through three perspectives: by air, by land and by sea.

Paper aeroplanes, fossils and sea-worn stones sit alongside parachute silk, canvas tenting and sail cloth. Each has its own connection to movement and exploration, but they also feel like the sorts of things that naturally find their way onto a creative desk. Objects picked up, made, kept and returned to simply because they spark something.

By Air

There is something wonderfully simple about a paper aeroplane. A sheet of paper, a few careful folds and suddenly it has a direction. It is part experiment, part engineering and part play, with each adjustment changing where it goes next.

Paired with parachute silk, the paper forms introduce a sense of lightness and movement to the Original 315. The materials might be simple, but both have been shaped by a desire to understand and work with the air around them.

It is an idea that feels at home alongside the lamp. The Original 315 is designed around movement too, using friction joints that allow its articulated arms to be repositioned with ease. Its focused beam follows, putting light precisely where you choose.

Navigation by air often means seeing the world differently. Changing your position, adjusting your perspective and finding a new way forward. Sometimes, the same can be said of the creative process.

By Land

Back on solid ground, the objects become heavier, rougher and more tactile.

Fossils sit against canvas tenting, bringing together two very different kinds of history. One records a world from millions of years ago. The other is a practical material made for heading out into it.

There is something compelling about the objects we collect from the landscape. A fossil discovered on a walk, an unusual stone or a piece of material can become a permanent fixture on a desk or shelf. Not because it serves an obvious purpose, but because it reminds us of a particular place, moment or discovery.

For designers, artists and makers, these collected objects can become references in their own right. Texture, colour, form and material are all stored away, ready to reappear in an idea somewhere down the line.

The Original 315 brings a different kind of history to the scene. Its design draws on Anglepoise engineering stretching back generations, but it remains an object intended to be touched, adjusted and used. Like the canvas surrounding it, its purpose is practical.

By Sea

Few objects show the effect of a journey quite like a sea-worn stone. Edges are softened, surfaces are marked and every piece is slightly different from the next. Placed alongside sail cloth, these natural forms create a contrast between something shaped by the sea and something designed to move across it.

In the 1940s, navigators relied on charts, careful observation and precise calculations to establish their course. The lamp that inspired the Original 315 provided a concentrated pool of light across those chart tables, illuminating the task without unnecessarily lighting the surrounding space.

The tools have changed considerably since then, but there is still something evocative about plotting a route across a map and setting out without being able to see the entire journey ahead.

A sail cloth adds another layer to that story. Tough, functional and shaped entirely by what it needs to do, it sits naturally alongside a lamp similarly defined by purposeful design.

The Things We Collect Along the Way

Look closely at almost any well-used creative desk and you will find more than the tools needed for the job.

There might be postcards pinned to a wall, stones brought home from a beach, old notebooks, sketches, samples, photographs or objects whose significance isn’t immediately obvious to anyone else. Over time, a workspace becomes a collection of interests as much as a place to work.

But they also represent curiosity in its everyday form. The instinct to pick something up, look a little closer and keep it because there is something about its shape, story or material that interests you.

Not every journey needs a map. Sometimes exploration begins at the desk, with an object, a question or an idea that sends you in an entirely unexpected direction.

A Lamp with Navigation in Its DNA

The Original 315 Desk Lamp – Navigation Edition brings the story back to where it began.

Inspired by the Anglepoise lamps used on navigators’ chart tables in the 1940s, the design combines a polished aluminium shade with matte black components and a bright, directional beam. Friction joints allow the lamp to move smoothly into position, directing light across the task at hand.

Alongside the lamp are a series of accessories designed for the things that happen around a working desk: a notebook and holder for capturing thoughts, a pencil and holder for sketching them out, and interchangeable clips for keeping references close at hand.

They are small details, but they reflect the spirit behind the Original 315. A lamp created for navigation then, reimagined for the desks, studios and workspaces where people are finding their own direction today.

By air, by land or by sea, there is always something new to discover.

Discover the Original 315 Desk Lamp –
