Newly opened in January 2018, The Bristol Wing occupies the refurbished Grade II listed old police headquarters in the heart of Bristol City Centre. Owned and managed by YMCA Bristol, the hostel caters for single travellers, groups and families in a mix of private, ensuite and dorm rooms, with communal spaces on the ground floor and an award-winning on-site cafe and also offers accommodation to at-risk young people. All profits are reinvested in supporting young people who are homeless in the city.

Working in close collaboration with the client and contractor, Story Design set out to reflect both the history and the slightly institutional nature of the building, introducing playful graphics and discrete decorative touches to make it feel more comfortable. Budget constraints, along with a commitment to maintain the character of the building, made repurposing a major driver. So original terrazzo WC cubicles were reused as worktops and the original 1920s lift was refurbished, the shaft retrofit to meet modern regulations. In place of typical utility solutions, Anglepoise® Original 1227™ Range wall lights in standard and mini sizes were installed in both the ground floor reception/café space and all of the bedrooms.

Says Kenton Simmons of Story Design:

“Anglepoise was an immediate choice - we had visions of a smoky office with detectives sitting at desks, lit by original Anglepoise lamps... so using the 1227 made perfect sense - rarely is a product so well suited to its surroundings! “
