New real estate and construction consultancy Cast needed an office that would reflect their identity and promote quality and innovative construction methods. Located within a former industrial facility, the challenge was to create a variety of activity specific spaces within an irregular shaped perimeter lacking internal structural elements. Design practice Hawkins\Brown’s inventive approach was to create two feature walls - one arched to reflect archways found in British residential architecture - dividing the public and noisy open plan area from private spaces such as meeting rooms, break out areas and collaboration spaces. Fixed furniture was added to further subdivide the space into smaller work areas while also providing storage and display.
A series of Anglepoise® + Margaret Howell Yellow Ochre desk lamps, interspersed with Type 75™ lamps in brushed aluminium, provide focused light at workspaces while making connection to the industrial heritage of the host building. This strong injection of colour, further emphasised by loose furnishings, contrasts with the otherwise largely natural materials, adding a homely feel and hinting at the residential market in which Cast operates.
‘A key element within this scheme is being able to see the craftsmanship and manufacturing of the design and the Anglepoise® reflects this concept by exposing and celebrating its components. With the office being in Clerkenwell, London’s heart of design, it was important to promote and feature a British brand as a prominent part of the design.’ Hawkins\Brown
