Located in a former warehouse, Montoya draws on the rich industrial heritage and architecture of Barcelona’s Pobelnou neighbourhood, once one of Spain’s largest 20th Century industrial complexes. Now transformed by Designers Skye Maunsell and Jordi Veciana into a curated workspace for an influential and creative collective to connect, inspire and collaborate, Montoya is also a cultural home for a diverse programme of interests and events.
Access to the building is though Pasaje Montoya, a private covered passageway with original wrought iron gate and border of lush greenery. Once inside, large windows connect the tranquil, green-bordered passageway with the interior ground floor space. Here, traditional ‘Boveda Catalana high vaulted brick ceiling and original distressed walls and flooring set the scene for a spacious light-filled workspace, furnished with extra-large custom-made tables and a collection of complimentary miss-matched chairs, sofas and armchairs in subtle natural and pastel tones. Lighting, selected for both practical and aesthetic simplicity, is an essential feature, and includes a series of Anglepoise® Type 75™ Mini desk lights, while translucent floor-to-ceiling mesh curtains can be drawn to add warmth and privacy.
A modern, minimal staircase leads to the basement, where more Anglepoise® lights sit atop workspace desks. Another staircase at the back of the building leads to a 450m2 multi-purpose event and meeting space with floor-to-ceiling glass wall and outdoor patio, also furnished with a custom made table and Type 75™ Mini desk lights.
