About Our Designers

Anglepoise has always been shaped by people who like to solve problems with light. It began with automotive engineer George Carwardine and his ingenious idea for the Original 1227™. It grew as Sir Kenneth Grange refined and extended the collection, treating each new lamp as a piece of everyday equipment rather than a museum piece. More recently, our collaboration with Paul Smith has brought a fresh and playful eye to the same timeless mechanism. The result is a family of designs that feel at home on a kitchen table, in a studio, in a bar or hotel, and on display in galleries and museums around the world. Our Original 1227™ has even been honoured by Royal Mail alongside other British Design Classics such as the Mini, Penguin Books and the Routemaster Bus.

George Carwardine

When automotive engineer, George Carwardine chanced upon a formula for a new kind of spring, he had created the blueprint for a groundbreaking articulated task lamp that could combine ultimate flexibility with perfect stability. Two years later the Original 1227™ was born.

Sir Kenneth Grange

Design Director of Anglepoise between 2003 and 2024, Sir Kenneth Grange began his illustrious career as a technical illustrator whilst in National Service. He subsequently made his reputation as an industrial product designer and in association with four partners founded Pentagram, now an international design practice with offices in USA, Germany and London.

Paul Smith

Paul Smith is Britain’s foremost designer. He is renowned for his creative aesthetic, which combines tradition and modernity. Reaffirming the values that Paul set down in 1970, ‘classic with a twist’ remains the guiding principle of the company.

Margaret Howell

Esteemed British designer Margaret Howell has frequently championed the Anglepoise lamp, admiring the similar design qualities that are the essence of her clothing: simplicity, functionality, authenticity and timelessness.

Anglepoise Design

Our in house design team are responsible for making sure all our products are fit for purpose and made to last and, whilst we always stay true to our heritage we must also refine, revisit and renew what we do to make sure we are ready for today and the future. Acting as the linchpins between Anglepoise and its collaboration partners, our design team quietly work in the background on every new product we launch and, drawing inspiration from vintage products, they even design modern classics like the Anglepoise 90 Mini Mini, now one of our best selling lamps worldwide.
