The Anglepoise Model 1227 is one of the most iconic and recognisable lamp designs ever produced. Originally introduced in the 1930s, the Model 1227 established the classic Anglepoise silhouette and became known for its innovative spring-balanced mechanism, industrial styling and practical adjustability. Produced in several versions between approximately 1935 and 1968, the Model 1227 remains highly valued by collectors, restorers and everyday users alike.
Early Model 1227 lamps, produced from around 1935 to 1938, are typically identified by their solid three-tier painted base and elegant perforated shade with cooling holes around the upper sides and top. These lamps feature a fork assembly made from separate components, often with a chrome-plated central block marked “The Anglepoise – Made by Herbert Terry & Sons”. A visible earthing point can usually be found on the back of the fork block. The steel arms have a sharp square profile, with adjustable spring tension controlled through different mounting holes and a small adjuster knob positioned midway along the rear arms.
Later Model 1227 lamps, produced from the late 1930s onwards, evolved in construction while retaining the instantly recognisable Anglepoise form. These versions commonly feature a two-tier base with a steel cover, a one-piece cast fork and wider shades with ventilation slots positioned only on the top. Over time, additional refinements such as spring tension caps and nylon linkage components were introduced to improve functionality and durability.
