Proud East
London based design and architecture practise Studio TILT incorporated their unique codesign methodology to create a flexible eatery/events space – The Proud East. The challenge was to design a mixed-use and adaptable venue that would accommodate bar, café, restaurant, library, gallery, events and private hire spaces. To balance privacy with openness and create an atmosphere of creativity and conviviality, specific materials were selected to define the various zones. The restaurant covers two floors with a light and airy mezzanine level showing impressive views of the canal. The steel-structured space separates the open kitchen from the dining area above. Black-stained wooden floor contrasts with the white spruce ply bar and perpendicular larch ceiling fins. The double height Library Wall gives the space a personal scale by providing a constantly evolving backdrop of books, photography and exhibitions. A set of large white-panelled steel doors delineates the boundary between the event space and restaurant. Within the restaurant, bespoke plywood tables created by the Studio are matched with Eames DSW dining chairs, creating areas for collaborative work, where patrons can share ideas. On smaller tables, Anglepoise® Type75™ Mini table lamps denote more intimate workspaces for daytime coffee drinkers.
