Understanding Bulb Fittings

Most Anglepoise products made after 2000 use:

  • E27 or E14 screw bulbs (UK & Europe)
  • E26 or E12 screw bulbs (United States)

These are ES (Edison Screw) fittings — not BC (Bayonet Cap) fittings.

Older Anglepoise lamps, especially pre-2000 products or some rewire service parts, may still use BC Bayonet fittings, so it’s important to check your individual product before purchasing a replacement bulb.

The bulb type and maximum wattage are always shown on the label inside the shade.

Original 1227 & Type 75 Desk, Table and Floor Lamps

All Original 1227 and Type 75 desk and table lamps are supplied with a high-efficiency LED bulb. This provides the equivalent light output of a traditional 40W incandescent bulb while using much less energy.

The supplied bulb gives a warm white light and is designed to last for many years while reducing running costs.

Because traditional incandescent bulbs are no longer widely available in the UK and Europe, we recommend replacing bulbs with LED alternatives only. ECO halogen bulb types must not be used due to their high running temperatures they can damage the product and create a burn risk.

Important: Bulb Weight

For sprung desk lamps, bulb weight matters.

To allow the lamp to balance properly, the bulb should weigh approximately:

  • 25–60 grams

Many bulb manufacturers do not list bulb weight on packaging, so we recommend taking your existing bulb with you when shopping and comparing the weight in store.

All bulbs supplied with Anglepoise products are selected to ensure correct balance and performance.

Wall & Pendant Lights

Wall and pendant lights are much less sensitive to bulb weight, so most LED bulbs will work well.

For wall lights, we recommend choosing a:

  • Smaller style bulb
  • ‘Golf ball’ shaped LED bulb

This helps ensure the bulb does not protrude from the shade.

Type 80 Range

The Type 80 range of table, wall and pendant lights is supplied with a compact filament LED bulb specially selected to allow light to shine through the distinctive light escape feature at the top of the shade as well as below.

There are many compatible E27 filament LED bulbs available, but compact bulbs tend to provide the best overall effect.

90 Mini Mini

The 90 Mini Mini uses an integrated LED light module rather than a replaceable bulb.

The LED module is designed to last for:

  • Over 20,000 hours in normal use

You may notice a slight reduction in brightness over time, but the lamp should continue working for many years.

If the light module stops working or develops a fault, it can be replaced. Please contact us for support.

Understanding Light Color

Bulb color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K).

Color Temperature Appearance
Under 3000K Warm White
Around 4000K Cool White
Around 6500K Daylight

For most Anglepoise desk and table lamps, warm white bulbs are generally recommended for a softer, more comfortable light.
