Housed within a majestic Art Deco building in the heart of London’s Fitzrovia neighborhood, Maslow’s Mortimer House draws on the ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ philosophy of the venue’s namesake, providing for those who wish to create, work and unwind in equal measure. With ‘hospitable thinking’ at the core, New York based design-and-concept firm AvroKO lovingly restored the seven-storey space, melding newly-constructed, period-specific details with exposed features from the original building. The base level of Maslow’s Hierarchy, representing the “physiological needs” of the individual, is translated in the ground floor restaurant, Mortimer House Kitchen, open to members and the public. “Social belonging” is illustrated on the four members co-working floors, which provide fully furnished and intuitively designed workspaces, comprising team offices, single serving workspaces, a variety of meeting rooms, and communal living rooms, all carefully designed to foster a sense of community. Here, multiple Original 1227™ Mini Ceramic Table Lamps provide focused at light at each workspace, harmonizing with the neutral colour palette, chosen to allow the community itself to define the aesthetic. Floor Five is home to the Living Room and Den, inspired by the Hierarchy’s level of “esteem”. Here members can work or relax in an informal social setting – and when it all gets to much they can retreat to Floor Six (“self-actualization”,) an uncluttered whitewashed space which doubles as an event and art installation gallery and, when not in use, as a quiet space for work, reflection and meditation.
